On December 1-2, 2011, a delegation from the U.S. Department of State and Department of Defense (including the U.S. Coast Guard) visited Taipei for meetings with the Taiwan Authorities to discuss counter-piracy cooperation. The U.S. delegation was led by Donna Hopkins, Coordinator of the Counter Piracy and Maritime Security in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs at the Department of State.

Piracy at sea is a worldwide phenomenon. To address the shared security challenge it poses, the United States is actively pursuing a broad, coordinated, and comprehensive multilateral approach. During this visit, the U.S. delegation met with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Transportation, the Coast Guard Headquarters, and the Fisheries Bureau. The two sides held constructive and wide-ranging discussions on the problem of piracy at sea and on ways to expand our counter-piracy cooperation.
