Passports

Beginning April 24, 2022, AIT will accept online fee payments for adult U.S. passport renewal applications. Qualifying applicants who are renewing adult passports may pay the USD 130 passport fee online via U.S. or international credit or debit card, electronic funds transfer from a U.S.-based bank account, Amazon Pay, or Pay Pal. Please see here to determine if you are eligible for online fee payment.  See our FAQ page for more information on this new process.

Effective August 30, 2021, AIT no longer accepts walk-in renewals of 10-year adult passports. You must renew your passport by mail if your recent passport: is still valid or expired less than five years ago, has not been mutilated or damaged, was issued in your current name, and can be submitted with your application.

Please note: All individuals over the age of two coming to AIT for consular services are required to wear protective masks. You will not be allowed entry without a mask.

Taiwan has implemented temporary measures to counter the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak. In accordance with Taiwan regulations, any individual who is subject to quarantine will not be allowed to enter AIT. Please schedule appointments accordingly.  For the latest updates on Taiwan’s quarantine requirements, please monitor the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control website and the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bureau of Consular Affairs website. Please also reschedule your appointment if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms or believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19.

Please arrive to AIT at the time of your scheduled appointment.  If you arrive more than ten (10) minutes before or after your appointment, you will not be permitted entry and will have to reschedule online. There are no exceptions to this requirement.

Passport Validity – We recommend that you renew your passport at least 6 months before it expires. Many countries in the region do not allow you to enter unless your passport is valid for more than 6 months.  Country Specific Information on Entry/Exit Requirements for U.S. Citizens is available on travel.state.gov.

Expedite Service is not Available Overseas – The processing time is approximately three weeks.  We cannot expedite full-validity passports as this is the minimum time required to transmit the application to the U.S., produce the passport, and send it back to us by express mail.

Application Status – The status of your application should be available online 7-10 days after the application is complete.  To check the status, please click here.

First Passport for Your Baby – If you are applying for a US passport for the first time for a baby or child born outside the US, follow the instructions for reporting “Birth of a U.S. Citizen Abroad”.

Effective October 1, 2016, a Social Security Number (SSN) is required for all passport applications.  It is NOT enough to simply write 000-00-0000 because you do not know it or because you are certain that you do not have one.  This new regulation requires you to confirm the status of your Social Security Number (SSN) with the Social Security Administration (SSA) before submitting your passport application.  Contact SSA in Manila for assistance if one of the below applies to you:

  1. You have an SSN but do not remember the number; or
  2. You are uncertain whether you have an SSN
