Virtual Global Cooperation and Training Framework (vGCTF) Workshop on Combating Digital Crime
On March 22, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Taiwan Ministry of Justice (MOJ), the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (JTEA), the Australia Office, and the Slovak Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei co-hosted a virtual GCTF workshop entitled “Combating Digital Crime.”
Since the GCTF’s 2015 program launch, this virtual GCTF event is the first to focus on how international law enforcement agencies can cooperate to combat cyber-enabled financial crimes.
During the workshop, law enforcement officers discussed the latest trends in cyber-enabled financial crimes and shared best practices to promote international cooperation to fight these crimes. Expert panelists from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Federal Bureau of Investigation delivered a case study on how to combat crimes involving virtual currency while the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations officials shared best practices of how to fight crime on the Dark Web. Nearly 300 law enforcement officials from 32 countries participated in the event.
Although Taiwan is prevented from participating meaningfully in Interpol and many other international organizations, today’s event highlighted both the many ways that Taiwan is sharing its expertise with the international community as well as how the global cyber community shares lessons with Taiwan in order to tackle the shared challenge of cyber-enabled financial crime.
AIT, Taiwan’s MOFA, the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, and the Australian Office jointly administer the GCTF, which serves as a platform for Taiwan to share its expertise with partners around the world.
