From December 11-13 the United States and Taiwan convened disaster management professionals from 12 countries across the Indo-Pacific to explore ways to better integrate the private, civil, and public sectors into disaster response.
Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR), together with the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI- APCSS), hosted the three-day workshop in Taipei, Taiwan. Together, the participants analyzed the disaster response areas identified by the United Nations Cluster Approach, and looked for opportunities to mobilize new actors and improve regional response.
Representatives from Taiwan’s private, civil, and public sectors attended and shared their expertise and experience with regional disaster response. Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR) also facilitated a visit to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) to demonstrate how Taiwan is attempting to activate a whole-of-society disaster response.
Participants expressed optimism that engagements such as this would increase the ability of regional actors to work together. According to one participant, “This was a great opportunity to build relationships in Taiwan, and with our international partners.”
Some of the participants from the workshop will also participate in tomorrow’s Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) workshop on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, being held in Nantou.
