The U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative:
Continued Cooperation on Mandarin Chinese and English Language Education
Following the first high-level dialogue under the U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative in 2020, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the second high-level dialogue on March 1, 2022 to reaffirm both sides’ commitment to deepening cooperation on international education, particularly in the area of English and Mandarin Chinese language education, based on what both sides have achieved over the past few years.
The dialogue, conducted both in-person and virtually, was led on the U.S. side by Daniel Kritenbrink, the State Department’s Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs (EAP) and on the Taiwan side by Deputy Secretary-General of Taiwan’s National Security Council Szu-chien Hsu. U.S. attendees included U.S. Department of Education (DoE) Chief of Staff Shelia Nix, Deputy Assistant Secretary for EAP Camille Dawson, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) Ethan Rosenzweig, Managing Director of AIT Washington Ingrid Larson, and AIT Deputy Director Jeremy Cornforth.
Taiwan’s participation included Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Harry Tseng, Deputy Minister of Education Mon-Chi Liu, Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Deputy Minister Roy Leu, MOFA DG Douglas Hsu, Ministry of Education DG Nicole Lee, OCAC Deputy Director-General Jack Huang, and TECRO Deputy Representative Robin Jung Chun Cheng.
During the two-hour dialogue, both sides reviewed the achievements and efforts made under the U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative to date and exchanged ideas for future collaboration.
