Remarks by AIT Deputy Director Jeremy Cornforth at the Opening of
a
Virtual Global Cooperation and Training Framework (vGCTF) Workshop
on Building Resilience and Accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals Through Technology

Deputy to the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Prescott, Foreign Minister Wu, Chief Representative Izumi, panelists, virtual guests, good morning!

It is my pleasure to offer remarks to kick off this virtual GCTF on building resilience and accelerating the UN Sustainable Development Goals through technology.  We are grateful for the contributions of experts from the United States, Taiwan, and Japan and for the participation of distinguished guests from around the world.

As the world continues to face transnational challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, it is crucial that the international community work together through multilateral efforts to promote recovery, combat climate change, and to implement the Sustainable Development Goals.

Today we will hear from speakers who will highlight the ways that technology can help us respond to these challenges.  As Asia’s “Silicon Island,” Taiwan is a central node of the globe’s semiconductor ecosystem and a cutting-edge pioneer on emerging technologies ranging from 5G-ORAN to artificial intelligence.  Taiwan is also dedicated to using these technologies for the common good.

Although Taiwan is prevented from participating meaningfully in the World Health Assembly and many other international organizations, today’s event will highlight the many ways that Taiwan is sharing its expertise and using its technological prowess to help the international community solve shared challenges.  The United States remains committed to expanding Taiwan’s international space.

Taiwan has demonstrated time and again that it is a reliable partner and a force for good in the world, and we are proud to co-host this event.

Once again, on behalf of the American Institute in Taiwan, thank you all for your participation.
