Digital Minister Tang, Deputy Minister Kung, Director General Wu, Deputy Director General Tu, ladies and gentleman, good afternoon!

The United States and Taiwan have been active partners in the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) for the last several years. We are therefore very pleased to be here today to participate in the announcement of the 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Congress Plus (GEC+) on using Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things for social good.

For us, Taiwan hosting the GEC+ perfectly reflects the three biggest trends we see in Taiwan’s economy today.

First, Taiwan is quickly transitioning to an innovation-based economy. It has historically been known for manufacturing quality electronics, and now we are pleased to see Taiwan promoting a vibrant entrepreneurial startup ecosystem as central to its economic plans.

Second, Taiwan is emerging as a global hub and launching pad for innovative startups. In the past, Taiwan was often seen as the gateway into China, but now Taiwan is increasingly seen as the gateway into South and Southeast Asia. We are particularly pleased to see Taiwan playing a leading role in the development of GEN Asia.

Third, Taiwan does everything with a good heart. What most distinguishes Taiwan is it does not pursue innovation simply for purposes of making money – although that is certainly a good thing to do too – rather, it always puts positive social benefit first and foremost. In this respect, Taiwan acts as a role model for the whole world.

The United States looks forward to being an active participant at the GEC+ in September and we consider ourselves fortunate to have Taiwan as our close partner in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Thank you.
