As part of our yearlong campaign celebrating forty years of U.S.-Taiwan friendship and cooperation, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is pleased to name June AIT@40 Technology & Digital Economy Month. Each month of 2019 will feature a different theme, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the growing U.S.-Taiwan partnership.
In honor of AIT@40 Technology & Digital Economy Month, AIT is happy to announce a series of events that underscore the strong technology cooperation ties that bind the United States and Taiwan.
To set the stage for Technology & Digital Economy Month, from May 28-30 AIT and Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Institute for the Information Industry, co-hosted 45 participants from 24 Indo-Pacific partners for a Global Cooperation and Training Framework Workshop on Network Security and Emerging technologies.
In celebration of Technology & Digital Economy Month, the United States government is sponsoring three Taiwan investors and five Taiwan digital economy entrepreneurs to attend the June 3-5 Global Entrepreneurship Summit in the Netherlands where they will network with 1,500 of the world’s top entrepreneurs.
On June 4, AIT will host the first of four Public Forums to discuss the results of the Digital Dialogues AIT is holding with the Taiwan public on each of AIT Director Christensen’s four major policy priorities, better known as his “Four Promotes.” In cooperation with Digital Minister Audrey Tang’s office, the Digital Dialogues use artificial intelligence and the wisdom of the crowd to identify the most promising ideas for future U.S.-Taiwan cooperation. Such an exercise in internet freedom and citizen participation is a fitting celebration of participatory democracy on the 30th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.
On June 18, Director Christensen will give his second major policy address of the year on promoting economic and commercial ties between the United States and Taiwan within the context of the United States’ vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. TAITRA Chairman James Huang and representatives from other foreign missions in Taiwan will discuss strategies for deepening Taiwan’s economic ties with the larger Indo-Pacific, in particular with respect to the digital economy.
Deputy Director Greene will join experts from around the world at the June 20 Asia Pacific News Literacy Conference organized by Facebook to examine how to enhance media literacy and combat foreign digital interference in the healthy functioning of democratic society. Neutralizing the effect of disinformation online has emerged as a central challenge for 21st century democracy.
AIT will close out AIT@40 Technology & Digital Economy Month through participation in the APEC Online to Offline Summit, where AIT Deputy Director Greene and U.S. Small Business Administration Advisor Bryan O’Byrne will speak on digital economy cooperation within APEC and embracing regulatory sandboxes as a means of helping transition to an innovation-based society.
For decades, the United States and Taiwan have enjoyed close technology cooperation. AIT@40 Technology & Digital Economy Month is a celebration of how we are bringing our technology cooperation into the digital age.
