AIT Press Release #: PR-1823

The American Institute in Taiwan is pleased to announce the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America’s (NYO-USA) first visit to Taiwan!  NYO-USA, a group 106 of America’s finest young musicians aged 16-19, will visit Taiwan from July 22 to 24, 2018, as the first stop on their 2018 Asia Tour.  After Taiwan, the group will perform in Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, and Daejeon.

In Taiwan, NYO-USA will conduct three outreach programs on July 23 organized by AIT with support from local public and private sector organizations.  Some members of the group will perform at the AIT Youth Camp “Real People, Real Friendships – The U.S. Taiwan Relationship in the 21st Century” held at Academia Sinica from July 23-25.  Others will join a workshop with local young musicians from the Taipei Wind Orchestra and Symphonic Band.  Finally, a small group will conduct flash mob-style concerts at the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC) Taichung and Nangang stations for lucky passengers!

This program is part of THSRC’s “First Year of Arts,” a collaboration between the National Cultural and Arts Foundation (NCAF) and Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC) to bring arts to non-traditional audiences and venues.  The performance at the Nangang Station is also in celebration of the recent dedication of AIT’s new office building.

About the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America

Each summer since 2013, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute brings together the brightest young players aged 16-19 from across the United States to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), a free program for all participants.  Following a comprehensive audition process and a three-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers tour some of the great music capitals of the world, serving as dynamic music ambassadors.

The NYO-USA 2018 Asia tour is led by world-acclaimed conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, with a program showcasing Gershwin’s effervescent Piano Concerto in F major, Sibelius’s heroic Symphony No. 2, and Brass Tacks by Ted Hearne, a new work commissioned by Carnegie Hall for NYO-USA.  The only concert in Taipei will be held at the National Concert Hall on July 24, presented by the Management of New Art.
