The American Institute in Taiwan Kaohsiung Branch Office is pleased to announce that former New York Yankees Manager Carl “Stump” Merrill will visit Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County from November 16 to November 17. Merrill was invited to Taiwan by the Kaohsiung American School to conduct a cultural program with the themes of tolerance and teamwork. Merrill conducted a similar program in Kaohsiung City and Taitung County from November 15 to November 20, 2009. The program is made possible by a grant to the Kaohsiung American School from the U.S. Department of State.
Merrill began his baseball career as a catcher at the University of Maine, where he also played football and earned a degree in physical education. Merrill joined the New York Yankees in 1985 as first-base coach for manager Yogi Berra. He was manager of the New York Yankees in 1990 and 1991. He won his 1000th game as a manager on August 2, 1996, when he served as head coach of the Columbus Clippers. Merrill returned to New York in 2005 asSpecial Assistant to the General Manager of the New York Yankees. He continues to hold that position today.
In addition to visiting the Kaohsiung American School, Merrill will observe the 2010 National Junior Baseball Tournament in Gangshan, Kaohsiung County, on the morning of November 16, and then conduct baseball clinics with Choung Hsiao Junior High School baseball players in the afternoon. On November 17, Merrill will attend a press conference at Qianjin Junior High School in Kaohsiung City to meet with the local media, baseball managers, coaches and players. At the press conference, Merrill will co-preside over a special ceremony with AIT Kaohsiung Branch Office Chief Chris Castro to present AIT Certificates of Recognition to the players and coaches who performed so successfully at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in August 2010, while representing Fu Hsing Elementary School in Kaohsiung. Following the press conference, Merrill will conduct baseball clinics at Li-de Baseball Park in the afternoon.
