PR-0917E | The members of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange, including representatives from the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are pleased to announce that Dr. Chen Tung-jung has been appointed the executive director of the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (FSE), the administrative office of the Fulbright academic exchange program in Taiwan. Dr. Chen will succeed Dr. Wu Jing-jyi, whose long-term leadership of Taiwan’s Fulbright program has created immeasurable opportunities for international learning, collaboration and exchange between scholars from Taiwan and the United States.
Dr. Chen will take up his new duties on July 1, 2009. He is a native of Yunlin County and a former Taiwan Fulbright scholar. Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in English with a concentration in American Studies from Michigan State University. He then began a successful teaching career at National Central University, where he eventually served as chair of the English Department. Dr. Chen later joined the Ministry of Education, serving as director of the cultural divisions of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices (TECO) in Canberra, Australia, and New York City. He is currently a professor of English and dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Yu Da College of Business.
Of Dr. Chen’s appointment, FSE Board Chair and AIT Spokesman Thomas Hodges remarked, “Dr. Chen’s experiences as a scholar of American literature, a Fulbright grantee, and a TECO cultural official overseas give him the perfect academic and international background for this position. AIT and our Taiwan Fulbright partners look forward to his leadership in recruiting the next generation of Fulbright grantees from Taiwan and the United States.”
