COVID-19 Information

*** Effective December 6, 2021, all airline passengers to the United States ages two years and older, regardless of vaccination status or citizenship, must provide a negative COVID-19 viral test taken within one calendar day of travel.  Alternatively, travelers to the United States may provide documentation from a licensed health care provider of having recovered from COVID-19 in the 90 days preceding travel.  Check the CDC website for additional information and Frequently Asked Questions.

Taiwan-specific Information:

Taiwan has confirmed cases of COVID-19 within its borders.
The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control provides daily updates on the number of confirmed cases. The American Institute in Taiwan continues to closely monitor the development related to COVID-19.
U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest COVID-19 and U.S. Citizen Services updates.

COVID-19 Testing:

Are PCR and/or antigen tests available for U.S. citizens in Taiwan? Yes.

If so, are test results reliably available within one calendar day? Yes.
Self-pay COVID-19 test is widely available at hospitals throughout Taiwan.
An English test report is available after 48 hours or less.
Test report can be delivered only by in-person pick up.
Cost of testing as listed by the hospitals varies from NTD 3,500 to NTD 8,000 (USD 127–286)

Humanitarian exemptions to this order will be granted on an extremely limited basis and will only be considered when the country of departure lacks adequate COVID-19 testing capacity. To submit information in support of an exemption, email <TaipeiACS@state.gov>

COVID-19 Vaccine Information:

Has the government of Taiwan approved a COVID-19 vaccine for use? Yes.
Are vaccines available in Taiwan for U.S. citizens to receive? Yes.
Which vaccines are available in Taiwan? AstraZeneca, Moderna, BNT and Medigen.

The U.S. government does not plan to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to private U.S. citizens overseas. Please follow Taiwan CDC developments and guidelines for COVID-19 vaccination.

Entry and Exit Requirements:

Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? Yes.
- Taiwan currently allows foreign nationals who hold a valid Alien Resident Certificates (ARCs) or special entry permits for humanitarian reasons to enter Taiwan. Special entry permits are issued by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the United States. More information can be found here.
- The American Institute in Taiwan has no say in these policies, and these are subject to change at any time.
Effective May 9, 2022, upon entry, Taiwan requires all foreign nationals to undergo a 7-day quarantine period. More information can be found here.
- You are required to purchase a local SIM card at the airport for the purpose of location tracking while you are under quarantine.
Effective March 7, 2022, business travelers are permitted to enter and a special permit is required. More information can be found here.
Effective January 4, 2022, all travelers to Taiwan are required to present a certificate of a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test report issued within two calendar days, which is based on the specimen collection date, before boarding their flight to Taiwan. More information about the new measure can be found on CDC Taiwan’s website.
Effective May 19, 2021:
- Non-Taiwan nationals without a valid Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) will be temporarily barred from entry. Exceptions may be made for individuals who obtain entry permission for emergency or humanitarian reason. More information can be found here.
- Transit travelers will be temporarily barred from entry. More information can be found here.

Are health screening procedures in place at airports and other ports of entry? Yes.
Any traveler arriving from outside Taiwan and granted entry are subject to a 14-day home quarantine. They will be required to complete a health declaration form, accurately provide their travel and contact history, and provide proof of the place of quarantine. Those who choose to quarantine at home shall make an affidavit to declare they have met the requirement of one person per residence.
Short-term business travelers are required to complete the 14-day quarantine. More information can be found here.

Movement Restrictions:

There is no curfew in place.
There are no restrictions on intercity travel.

Quarantine Information:

Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? Yes.
- Regardless of your vaccinated status, you are still required to be quarantined upon arrival for 10 days.

Effective March 7, 2022: mandatory quarantine to be shortened to 10 days. More information can be found here.
Symptomatic individuals will be sent to designated medical facilities for tests; the relevant health authorities will also begin active monitoring.

Transportation Options:

Are commercial flights operating? Yes.
- Commercial flights between the U.S. and Taiwan are available but limited. Travelers should contact airlines directly for information about flight options and be prepared for the implementation of travel restrictions with little to no advance notice. Please check with airlines for latest schedules.
Is public transportation operating? Yes. Buses and metro are operating on normal schedules.
Effective August 6, face masks are mandatory at the Taipei and Kaohsiung Metro, buses, government buildings, hospitals, grocery stores, schools, indoor exhibition halls, religion gathering venues, entertainment establishments, and major events.

Fines for Non-Compliance:

Failure to comply with mask wearing requirements can result in fines ranging from NTD 3,000 to NTD 15,000 (USD $100–$500)
Failure to comply with quarantine requirements can result in fines ranging from NTD100,000 to NTD 1,000,000 (USD $3,560–$35,560)
