The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is pleased to announce that the American Corner will open in Taipei on March 30, 2012.
The Taipei American Corner, located at the main library of the Taipei Public Library, features books, pamphlets, and DVDs about American culture and society. The Corner plays host to American speaker programs and cultural activities, providing an abundant source of information about all things American to the residents of Taipei, as well as a regular English-language storytelling program for young people. The Corner also features ebooks and a state of art digital environment.
AIT Deputy Director Eric Madison, Taipei City Deputy Mayor Tim Ting, and Taipei Public Library Director Horng Shih-chang will unveil the Taipei “American Corner” in the opening ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012. Acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Kathleen Stephens will deliver a video greeting during the ceremony. Members of the media are welcomed to cover the ceremony.
The American Corner grows from the success of the Taipei American Space, opened in January 2011. Recognizing this operation’s resonance with the people of Taipei and the outstanding cooperation from the Taipei Public Library, AIT moved to upgrade it to an “American Corner,” thus joining Taiwan’s other American Corners in Taichung and Kaohsiung.
A total of 447 cities around the world host the growing network of American Corners. Thanks to the efforts of the Taipei Public Library and Taipei’s popular response to this American library initiative, Taipei now becomes the latest city to join this list.
