The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) cautions U.S. citizens that Typhoon Chanthu is currently in the western Pacific Ocean east of Taiwan. This severe typhoon has been building in intensity and moving rapidly toward Taiwan.
Typhoon Chanthu poses major risks and potential damage from both high winds and torrential downpours, especially on Saturday and Sunday when the island will likely feel the full brunt of the storm. Expect heavy rainfall, dangerous storm tides, and possible flooding to occur. Due to this year’s drought, mountainous areas face a greater risk of landslides and catastrophic flash flooding.
All U.S. citizens living in or traveling to the area should monitor local weather reports, follow directions from local officials, and take other appropriate actions as needed. International Community Radio Taipei (ICRT) provides regular weather bulletins in English on 100.7 FM in the Taipei and Kaohsiung areas and on 100.1 FM in Taichung
