Host Virtual Global Cooperation and Training Framework (vGCTF) Workshop
on Trade Secrets Protection and Digital Piracy Prevention
This morning, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office (THPO), and the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (JTEA) kicked off a two-day virtual Global Cooperation and Training Framework workshop on intellectual property rights (IPR) protection with a focus on prosecution of cross-border cases related to trade-secrets theft and industry’s measures to protect trade secrets. IPR protection is a critical driving force for economic development in the modern digital economy.
AIT Director Brent Christensen joined Ministry of Justice Minister Tsai Ching-hsiang, MOFA Deputy Minister Tseng Ho-jen, and JTEA Deputy Chief Representative Hoshino Mitsuaki in delivering opening remarks. Director Christensen’s remarks highlighted the “Four I’s,” which are the virtuous cycle of interaction, IPR protection, investment, and innovation. “Promotion of the Four I’s will make each of our economies stronger as we develop the global economy for the modern era.” Christensen said.
Discussions in the June 17-18 morning sessions will cover IPR strategies on trade development, efforts from the government and private sectors to combat online IP infringement, cross-border case studies on trade-secrets theft, and companies’ compliance on trade-secrets protection. Panelists are from THPO, Taiwan District Court, Taiwan District Prosecutors Office, National University of Singapore, U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ), and private sectors. USDOJ Deputy Assistant Attorney General Richard Downing and THPO Chief Prosecutor Hsing Tai-chao will make closing remarks.
Government officials with responsibility for IPR protection from 20 different countries are joining the webinar, sharing their own experiences to take lessons learned back to their own work on confronting the common challenge of combatting IPR infringement.
