AIT Extends Condolences for the Tragic Helicopter Crash on January 2, 2020

We are deeply saddened by this morning’s tragic helicopter crash, which took the lives of eight passengers, including Chief of the General Staff General Shen I-Ming. On behalf of the United States of America, the American Institute in Taiwan extends its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and communities of those lost in the crash; we wish the survivors a quick and full recovery.  Many past and present employees of AIT had the great pleasure of working with General Shen and the others who passed away to advance U.S.-Taiwan security cooperation. The absence of these dear friends and dedicated partners will be felt for many years to come.  We hope that our steadfast commitment to supporting Taiwan’s security will honor their memory.

AIT Director Brent Christensen said, “I was privileged to work closely with General Shen in our joint efforts to strengthen the U.S.-Taiwan security relationship.  With his keen insight and good humor, he was a valued leader, colleague and friend.  He will be sorely missed.”

AIT stands ready to assist our Taiwan counterparts in the aftermath of this tragedy.
