The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is delighted to collaborate with the Taiwan Women’s Film Association in support of the 2017 Women Make Waves Film Festival (WMWFF). The Festival will run from October 13-22 at Spot-Huashan Cinema in Taipei. AIT is supporting the U.S. documentaries in the festival.
Supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Taipei Cultural Affairs Bureau, and organized by the non-profit Taiwan Women’s Film Association, this year’s Women Make Waves Film Festival will feature a lineup of more than 80 feature, documentary, short, experimental, and animated films from around the world. The festival will also include a Taiwan female directors’ summit, a roundtable discussion on long-term care issues, a breakfast talk with international female directors, and a panel discussion on the social challenges facing Taiwan’s indigenous community.
This is the second year AIT will partner with the Women Make Waves Film Festival. The twelve American film titles that will be featured in WMWFF constitute a major portion of the program line-up. In addition, the U.S. film Chavela will open the festival. Noted U.S. filmmaker Anne Hu (胡安妮), who is currently a senior producer at HBO, will attend the opening event and take part in the breakfast talk with international female directors on October 15.
“Rave in Peace” is the theme of the 2017 WMWFF. This year’s festival will focus on different ways for women filmmakers to manage challenges they may encounter in the filmmaking industry. Other key issues that will be addressed in the festival include long-term care, gender equality, and the liberation of female desire.
Women Make Waves Film Festival, Taiwan
Established as a non-profit organization in 1993, the Women Make Waves Film Festival (WMWFF) is one of Taiwan’s major film festivals and is the biggest film festival in Asia dedicated to supporting women in film. It aims to celebrate the achievements of outstanding female talent, to explore different aspects of women’s lives, and to promote the equality and rights of all genders. By covering a wide range of genres, issues, and representations of women, the Festival seeks to present and honor women’s wisdom and power as they are turned into films and gain mainstream recognition.
The American Institute in Taiwan
The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is a non-profit, private corporation established shortly after the United States Government changed its diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing on January 1, 1979. AIT is charged with carrying out the “commercial, cultural and other relations between the people of the United States and the people on Taiwan.” The Department of State, through a contract with the Institute, provides a large part of AIT’s funding and guidance in its operations.
