As part of our yearlong campaign celebrating forty years of U.S.-Taiwan friendship and cooperation, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is pleased to name May AIT@40 Immigration & Exchange Month. Each month of 2019 will feature a different theme, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the growing U.S.-Taiwan partnership.
In honor of AIT@40 Immigration & Exchange Month, AIT is pleased to announce a series of events that underscore the strong people-to-people ties that bind the United States and Taiwan.
AIT is also proud to announce our first-ever AIT-sponsored high school exchange program. From May 5 to May 23, 20 music students and teachers from Hsin Chu Senior High School, Kaohsiung Senior High School, Taichung Second Senior High School, and Wuling Senior High School will participate in the AIT@40 Youth Leadership Exchange Program in Cleveland, Ohio.
On May 24, AIT will invite local students to our new Neihu facility to participate in an Exchange Opportunities Day, where they will learn about how studies and exchanges in the United States can open up professional opportunities. The event will feature select panelists whose U.S. education or exchange experience contributed to their success in their respective careers here in Taiwan.
In observance of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, AIT is proud to host Taiwan-American Filmmaker Diane Tsai, who will visit Taiwan from May 28-June 05 to host film screenings, discussions, and workshops in Taipei, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Taitung as part of the Department of State’s American Film Showcase program.
May also marks an important milestone in U.S.-Taiwan cooperation on consular issues. The U.S. Department of State Special Advisor for Children’s Issues Suzanne Lawrence will travel to Taiwan to participate in the inaugural Joint Commission on International Parental Child Abduction. As part of an agreement recently signed by AIT and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO), the commission will strengthen coordination to protect children involved in abduction cases.
