AIT Celebrates Education Month in September
As part of our yearlong campaign celebrating forty years of U.S.-Taiwan friendship and cooperation, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is pleased to launch September as AIT@40 Education Month. Each month of 2019 features a unique theme, highlighting the increasingly multifaceted nature of U.S.-Taiwan relations today.
In honor of AIT@40 Education Month, AIT will host a series of events celebrating the strong educational ties between the United States and Taiwan.
AIT and the United Daily News Vision Project will host a special forum on education, career development, and youth empowerment at Taipei New Horizon 6F (No. 88, Yen Chang Rd. Taipei City) on September 3 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
AIT Director Brent Christensen will open the, “Strong Foundation, Bright Future: AIT@40, U.S.-Taiwan Relations since 1979” exhibition at the Tamsui Historical Museum on September 5. The exhibit will run from September 5 to September 26, 2019.
On September 6, Director Christensen will join new Foundation for Scholarly Exchange Executive Director Dr. Randall Nadeau in welcoming the 2019-2020 cohort of U.S. Fulbright scholars and fellows to Taiwan in a reception at the Great Skyview Hotel.
On September 10, AIT will host a reunion for U.S. government exchange program alumni from all over Taiwan featuring keynote addresses by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre Founder Lin Hwai-Min and Director Christensen.
On September 10 and 11, AIT and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will cohost an international workshop on Defending Democracy through Promoting Media Literacy under the auspices of the U.S-Taiwan Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF). In October 2018, we held the first GCTF on disinformation, which focused on media literacy educational programs. With elections upcoming in both Taiwan and the United States, this year’s workshop aims to examine the different ways that disinformation influences elections, assess the implementation of various media literacy education programs around the world, and explore how government and civil society initiatives have evolved to preserve election integrity.
On September 12, AIT and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold the inaugural session of the U.S.-Taiwan Consultations on Democratic Governance in the Indo-Pacific Region. This new forum will convene annually to coordinate policy and create joint programming to promote democratic institutions and the rule of law throughout the region. The consultations will be led by DRL Senior Bureau Official Scott Busby and the Deputy Administrator for Asia Anne Marie Yastishock from the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Springville Museum of Art Director Dr. Rita Wright will visit Taiwan from September 12 to 18 to give a series of lectures on arts education and outreach in Taipei, New Taipei City, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. Dr Wright will also be guest of honor at an Art in AIT reception on September 17 at Director’s Christensen’s residence.
U.S.-Taiwan education cooperation extends beyond just cooperation in schools to life-long and professional learning opportunities. Under the auspices of the Talent Circulation Alliance, on September 17 AIT is co-organizing with Dun & Bradstreet’s Chief Data Officer Anthony Scriffignano a conference on Hacking for Good and on September 19 a Forum on the AI Revolution and the Digital Transformation of Industry. On September 27, we are working with Microsoft for the Grand Opening of their AI Research Center Training Academy, and on September 28th will be the 1st Annual Talent Circulation Alliance International Job Fair, which will raise awareness of the rules governing and opportunities for foreign and internationally-oriented professionals in Taiwan.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education will hold an international education fair at Huashan 1914 Creative Park from September 28 to September 29, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
Finally, in September, AIT will welcome State Department English Language Fellow Robert Powell. Mr. Powell will be primarily based at the National Taipei University of Education during the 2019-2020 academic year and will provide pre-service teacher training in various areas including content-based instruction, American culture, and STEM as a part of AIT’s ongoing support for English language teaching and learning in Taiwan.
