The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is pleased to announce the Taiwan visit of “TIME Firsts” Filmmaker Diane Tsai from May 28 – June 5, 2019. Tsai, a Taiwanese-American award-winning filmmaker at TIME magazine, will present a series of documentary screenings, workshops, and discussions in Taipei, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung focused on women and girls’ empowerment, immigration, youth civic participation, aboriginal rights, and the transformative power of documentary filmmaking. This program is in celebration of May as AIT@40 Immigration & Exchange Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Tsai’s visit is supported by the American Film Showcase Program, a joint project of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Cinematic Arts. Local partners include Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, the Chimei Museum, the Kaohsiung Film Archive, Garden of Hope (Taitung Office), the Taiwan Film Institute, the Taiwan Women’s Film Association, the Foundation of Women’s Rights Promotion and Development, the Kaohsiung Women’s Awakening Association, Shih-Hsin University, Tainan National University of the Arts, National Taitung University, and Womany.

About Diane Tsai, “TIME Firsts,” and the American Film Showcase
Diane Tsai is a filmmaker at TIME with extensive experience in reporting, shooting, and editing character-driven narratives. She is a producer of “Firsts,” TIME’s expansive multimedia project on 46 groundbreaking women, from Hillary Clinton to Selena Gomez. She also filmed, produced, and edited “Evidence of Things Unseen,” a TIME Red Border Film featuring an Iraq War veteran and former President George W. Bush. Other notable projects include TIME’s 2017 Person of the Year video “The Silence Breakers” and 2016 presidential election coverage.
Diane is a graduate of Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism and is currently based in New York City. She was raised in southern California and is a proud Taiwanese American.
“TIME Firsts,” is a TIME magazine multimedia project that spotlights female pioneers in the United States who are changing the world. The “TIME Firsts” Taiwan edition consists of 24 episodes selected from the original 46 episodes. Featured female icons include prominent U.S. political figures like Hillary Rodham Clinton, Nikki Haley, and Nancy Pelosi; female athletes who broke barriers in sports like Mo’ne Davis, Danica Patrick, and Serena Williams; top scientists like Sylvia Earle and Kathryn Sullivan; and leading cultural voices like Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres. The total running time is 58 minutes.
The American Film Showcase (AFS) is the State Department’s flagship film exchange program. Implemented by the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Cinematic Arts, AFS supports the exchange of U.S. films, filmmakers, and film experts in support of foreign policy priorities, including human rights, civil society, entrepreneurship, STEM education, and countering disinformation.
