AIT is pleased to announce that March is AIT@40 Shared Values Month. AIT@40 is a yearlong campaign celebrating forty years of U.S.-Taiwan friendship and cooperation. Each month of 2019 will have a theme to highlight the multifaceted nature of the U.S.-Taiwan partnership.
Our shared values – including democracy, tolerance, freedom, pluralism, and equality under the law – are one of the strongest ties that binds the United States and Taiwan. Both of our people have a vibrant history of tirelessly working to expand our freedoms and protect fundamental rights. Both of our societies have made great strides and have much to be proud of. At the same time, we must never take our rights and freedom for granted. That’s why we continue to work, separately and together, towards ensuring that future generations enjoy these same freedoms and carry forward our shared values.
We hope you will join us as we celebrate March as Shared Values Month. We have a number of exciting events planned. On March 8, International Women’s Day, we will be screening “Time Firsts,” a series of short films about American women who have overcome stereotypes and naysayers to achieve great things in fields ranging from science and the arts to politics, business, and sports. The U.S. Government is working together with Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy to sponsor a conference in Taipei entitled “A Civil Society Dialogue on Securing Religious Freedom in the Indo-Pacific Region.” This forum will be attended by religious freedom leaders from over 15 countries and the U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback. This dialogue builds on the July 2018 Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom led by Secretary Pompeo that Taiwan also attended. Later this month, the United States and Taiwan will co-sponsor a Global Cooperation and Training Framework international training workshop on combatting corruption in the public and private sectors, which will also include participants from over a dozen countries. Also in March, Carrie Sperling, Co-Director of the Wisconsin Innocence Project and an expert on criminal justice reform and legal education, will give a presentation on U.S. and Taiwan approaches to exonerating the innocent. We will be announcing other activities as the month progresses.
