PR-0931E | The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) American Cultural Center is pleased to host a photo exhibition by U.S. artist Ben Sloat. The exhibition, entitled Yellow in August – Photographs and Installation by Ben Sloat, will open on July 17 from 2:00 p.m. at the American Cultural Center with Mr. Sloat’s lecture on The American Documentary Photographic Tradition.
Ben Sloat is a 2008-2009 U.S. Fulbright Scholar grantee based in Meinong, Taiwan. His current work examines the cultural and ecological richness of rural areas, and how these areas confront such issues as development, modernity, and a changing cultural fabric. Through his work, Mr. Sloat hopes not only to provide a unique perspective on the region, but also to provide a visual and artistic resource for the future. This exhibition includes a series of photographs taken by Mr. Sloat during his residency in Taiwan. He will also install a camera obscura through which visitors will be able to view the Taipei landscape and skyline.
Mr. Sloat teaches photography, digital media, and photo history at the Art Institute of Boston, Massachusetts. His recent exhibitions include solo shows at OH+T Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts, the Front Gallery in Oakland, California and Safe-T Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. His photographic work has been reviewed in the New York Times, the Oakland Tribune, and the Boston Globe.
