The American Institute in Taiwan is pleased to co-sponsor the 2018 Daniel Pearl World Music Day (DPMD) on Sunday, September 23, 2018 to honor American journalist Daniel Pearl’s legacy and to promote press freedom and tolerance, two shared values between the United States and Taiwan. The event will take place from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Taipei Hakka Cultural Park (No.2, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei). Members of the media are invited to cover the event.

Daniel Pearl Music Day is celebrated around the world and is a testament to the power of music to unite. Continuing the tradition of this festival, the day-long event will feature live musical performances, a vinyl DJ stage, foods by local restaurants, craft vendors and special DIY activities. Musical programming this year reflects the diversity of Taiwan, including new immigrant communities, which will be represented by “Relix and Fresh.” Other musical genres will include classic American swing and country, Balkan rock, Hakka tunes, and Taiwan indie music.

The concert coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, a time when friends and families gather together to celebrate the changing of seasons. This year the hosts extend a special invitation not only to the general public, but also to members of minority communities, especially migrant workers, new immigrants to Taiwan, and minority religious groups to join the day-long celebration of social inclusion and religious tolerance.

Since its inception, Daniel Pearl Music Day has grown internationally to include more than 13,900 performances in 140 countries harnessing the power of music to promote “Harmony for Humanity.” Taipei was one of the first cities to participate in this event.

An accomplished journalist and musician, Daniel Pearl died tragically in 2002 at the hands of terrorists while serving as the South Asia Bureau Chief for the Wall Street Journal. The AIT has supported the Daniel Pearl Music Day every year since 2009, to celebrate his life, promote press freedom, and spread a message of tolerance, hope and humanity.
